Why does my air conditioner keep blowing fuses?

In the searing heat of summer, many of us rely heavily on air conditioners to keep cool and comfortable. Alas, our trusty, frosty-air appliances don’t always cooperate; rebelling in a variety of different ways and leaving us frustrated and sweating. What’s an overheated homeowner to do?

One of an air conditioner’s common malfunctions is blown fuses or tripped breaker when the unit cycles on. Changing fuses all the time and attempting to diagnose a mysterious electrical problem takes a lot of time and it might be a sign something more serious in the works. Fuse or Power Supply Snafu

A consistently blown fuse or breaker when an air conditioner powers on is an issue with the power supply, electrical connection, or breaker circuits. Breakers and fuses are intentionally designed to trip if they encounter too much voltage and it doesn’t help to simply install a bigger fuse. Capacitor Troubles

Air conditioners included sealed refrigerant systems that will essentially last for decades unless there is a leak somewhere. Low refrigerant makes an A/C work harder and can trip a breaker or fuse. However, leaking refrigerant is dangerous and must be repaired immediately.

A Dirty Filter Meets Extreme Temperatures

Very hot temperatures create high energy demand which in turn requires an air conditioner to work extra hard to create and push cool air. If the system’s filter is dirty or clogged, it makes it all the more difficult and puts increased pressure on the system which often blows a fuse. Dirty condensers are similar culprits and in either case, your best strategy is to plan preventative maintenance before extreme temperatures settle in.
